A City That Feels Alive
Miramichi has always known how to come together.
You feel it at our festivals, in our arenas and parks, on our trails, in our community centres, and in the volunteers and families who continue showing up because they believe in this place.
Over the last nine years, I have had the privilege of helping bring fresh energy into Downtown Newcastle through events, programming, beautification projects, partnerships, and community activations designed to bring people back into the heart of our city.
That work was never just about organizing events. It was about creating connection.
Creating reasons for families to gather. Supporting local businesses. Building pride in our downtowns; and giving young people opportunities to participate and feel part of something bigger.
One of the clearest examples of that was helping evolve the Rock ‘n’ Roll Festival into Rockin’ River Fest. We worked to modernize a long-standing community tradition while preserving the spirit that made it special in the first place.
Festivals matter because they do more than entertain. They create memories, support tourism, bring life to our streets, and remind people that Miramichi is a community worth investing in and celebrating.
But this conversation goes beyond festivals.
Miramichi has incredible community assets already in place. Parks, trails, recreation spaces, community centres, waterfront areas, and neighbourhood gathering places. What many of those spaces need now is more programming, more activation, and more opportunities for people to connect with one another.
Programming for children. Recreation for youth. Activities for seniors. Events that bring neighbourhoods together and make our community feel alive.
As ParticipACTION’s Body Break reminded generations of Canadians, recreation and sport are catalysts for healthy communities. That is still true today. Recreation builds confidence, belonging, friendships, and stronger communities.
I believe the future of Miramichi is not only about infrastructure. It is about connection. About creating a city where people feel engaged, supported, proud of where they live, and optimistic about where we are heading.
We are only stewards of this city for a period of time. Our responsibility is to leave Miramichi stronger for the next generation and to build a foundation future leaders can continue growing from.
We already have so much to build on. The next chapter is about bringing people together, reigniting community spirit, and building a Miramichi that feels connected, energized, and full of possibility.
