A Better System of Support for Seniors
This is something our community is facing right now, not years down the road.
Across Miramichi, more seniors are choosing to stay in their homes. That’s not just preference, it’s dignity. It’s connection to place, to neighbours, to a lifetime of memories. But staying home only works when the right supports are in place, and right now, those supports don’t always connect the way they should.
We need to take this seriously.
This is not just about housing. It’s about how we support people as they age, and whether we are building a community that continues to include them every step of the way.
Programming is a big part of that. Not just activities for the sake of it, but opportunities that keep people engaged, active, and connected. When seniors are part of community life, their health and wellbeing reflect it.
Transportation plays a role too. It needs to be reliable, accessible, and designed with seniors in mind so people can continue to get where they need to go and stay involved in everyday life.
There are also practical supports we need to strengthen:
• Better coordination of existing services so people know where to turn
• Stronger partnerships with community organizations already doing the work
• Support for everyday needs like home maintenance and seasonal challenges
• More opportunities to reduce isolation and build connection
• Clear communication so seniors and families are not left to navigate this alone
None of this is out of reach. It comes down to leadership, coordination, and making it a priority.
If we want to be a city that people are proud to call home, then we need to be a city that stands behind them as they age.
